These home owners had big ideas about removing the wall separating the kitchen and dining rooms to create an open-plan on the main floor of their new townhouse.

Unfortunately, this single wall housed not only the home’s plumbing stack, but the electrical panel as well, making the wall not only complicated, but cost prohibitive to remove. Ultimately, the choice was made to simply expand the kitchen beyond it’s boundary instead of removing the wall, creating a quirky living/dining space that’s just right for fabulous dinner parties.

Being a heritage home in the city core meant this home was seriously lacking in storage. However, the placement of the home’s electrical panel made expanding the foyer coat closet impossible, so we made use of the awkward space under the stairs to add storage with a coat closet, ample adjustable shelving, and drawers for all of the miscellany that comes and goes.

This portrait of the couple’s rescue mutt was painted by his owner’s mother, so of course it needed a special spot of honour in the foyer cabinet. Adding this open space above the drawers not only showcased the pup, it also works to allow more window light into the dining area and breaking up the “massive box” aesthetic that the storage cabinet would have created without that detail.
